Preference of visual appearance varies from person to person. However, where web pages are concerned, the range of fonts that webmasters can select for their pages are not as wide as you may think. Even if you were to have a million fonts installed on your computer, you are mostly limited by what your website users have installed on their computers.
You can try good typography fonts for your website. Font selection is particularly important and it has to be accurate and based on a detailed analysis so that the textual content blends well with the graphics of the page, thereby tempting a person to remain on the site. While working on the graphic layout of a website, sometime you realize that using a certain font over another can greatly influence the overall look of a website. For instance, an excellent looking layout could lose its shine if the inserted text is not deemed a good match.
But we must say that it was not that easy to understand which font you should go with and which one you will not. In this article we discussed about the best fonts to use for web and how to choose them apparently.
Choose your font
It is best to use a standard set of fonts, so that web pages can be read without any problems by all the various users. If you want to use personalized fonts, it may be create some trouble for your viewers or may be create browsing problems. Here are few fonts that most widely use for websites:
Trebuchet: Very elegant typeface. It is best used in websites that are sophisticated and minimalist; sites that base their look on the typography. Most of the designers prefer to use it for the textual content, and it is best to avoid using it for the titles as a large font size does not look well for this font type.
Georgia: This one the favorite choice of designers. Perfect to use for any type of text, for titles, in italics or also as bold font. Be careful though, this font looks best with a line spacing of 22 pt. A line spacing of less than 22 pt makes reading difficult and it could distort the proportions of a webpage.
Verdana: This one is a great choice since it is the most readable font on the web and this is due to its clear-cut and soft look which makes it ideal for any type of project. Web designers prefer to use this font type on a small font size (such as 10/11 pt) instead of using it for titles and other big-sized text content.
Century Gothic: This one must be used with caution, since it is not the most readable font at size 12 and at size 20 it loses most of its quality. On the web, it must be said that it hasn’t been accepted entirely. However, in small doses it conveys a fresh style.
Every graphic designer knows how frustrating it is to work only with a standard set of fonts: this can be quite a limitation which can degrade the graphic work.
For a set of unique and cool-looking graphic effects (such as citations, slogans, titles, links) we suggest you to use more exclusive fonts that can be integrated in CSS as images. This will make your web pages much more unique. So basically there aren’t any fixed typefaces to choose. Select fonts which can go with your web design and concept.
Here are a few things you should keep in mind before choose your Typeface:
Font for perfect use
Use no more than 3 typefaces throughout your website: one typeface for your Headings, one for your body copy, and maybe another for navigation.
From a design perspective, your site will begin to look cluttered using more than 3 typefaces. To this same point, it’s smart to choose typefaces with several weights (bold, light, italic, etc.) so you can switch up the look of your text, and still have a visually cohesive design.
From a practical perspective, the more fonts you load onto your site (other than the original few), and the slower your load speed. The slower your load speed, the more visitors leave without even giving your website a chance to open.
Choose for perfect occasion
Picking a typeface is more like getting dressed in the morning. Just as with clothing, there’s a distinction between typefaces that are expressive and stylish versus those that are useful and appropriate to many situations, and a designer’s job is to try to find the right balance for the occasion. Every designer has a few favorite fonts like this — expressive personal favorites that they hold onto and wait for the perfect festive occasion to use.
So before choosing the right font for your website, you should concern about the type of your site. Select right font for right occasion. For example, Use san serif type font for business website, for fashion website use handwriting typeface etc.
Consider readability
First and foremost, your visitors need to be able to read the fonts you choose. For instance, decorative and very thin fonts should only be used as large headings so visitors are able to clearly read them.
For bulk on-screen reading, sans serif fonts like Arial are best. Sans serif fonts scale down well, and are easy to read from a back lit screen.
Maintain size
The size of your general body copy should range from about 13pt to 18pt, and headings should be even larger. If visitors have to squint to read your content, they’ll most likely leave your site without reading what you’ve got to say, and without supporting your cause.
